Why mental well-being must be our priority

Mental Health & Wellbeing

In today's fast-paced world, where the demands of life often feel unrelenting, taking notice of our well-being and mental health has become an imperative rather than a luxury.

The pressures of work, relationships and the crazy expectations we sometimes put on ourselves, can leave us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. It's crucial that we recognise the power of nurturing our mental and emotional state, as they play a pivotal role in our overall quality of life.

This blog delves into the importance of taking notice of your wellbeing and mental health and offers some actionable steps to support your wellbeing.  And if there’s ever a great time to reset, it’s now - during Mental Health Awareness Week 2023.  Five ways, five days focuses on a set of proven tools to boost our mental health when we need it.  Head to www.mhaw.co.nz to find out more.

Day 1, is centred on simply pausing, and taking notice. Paying a bit more attention to the present moment, our thoughts and feelings and the world around us.

The Mind-Body Connection

The relationship between the mind and body is undeniable. When we neglect our mental health, it can manifest in physical symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and even chronic diseases. Conversely, physical health issues can often trigger or exacerbate mental health conditions. This connection is key for a holistic approach to our wellbeing. Just as we care for our bodies through exercise and nutrition, taking notice and tending to our mental health through mindfulness and self-care is equally essential.

Signs of Neglected Wellbeing

It can be easy to ignore or shrug off the signs that our mental health and overall wellbeing are suffering. Feelings of persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, and a loss of interest in things we once enjoyed can be a flag to take action..  Physical changes can also be a sign, and should not be ignored such as disrupted sleep patterns, changes in appetite, and even unexplained aches and pains. As much as it much feel scary, acknowledging these signs early and chatting to someone - a friend or health professional, can prevent some issues taking hold.

The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health - seeking help is a sign of strength not weakness

Despite the growing awareness and openness around mental health, we know many feel a stigma - some folk still feel hesitant to seek help due to fear of judgement or misconceptions. It's crucial to recognise that seeking support for mental health challenges is a sign of strength, not weakness. Just as we wouldn't hesitate to consult a doctor for a physical ailment, we shouldn't hesitate to seek professional assistance for our mental and emotional struggles.

Practical Steps for Prioritising Wellbeing

  1. Take notice: Take time and pay attention to your feelings, your thoughts and your behaviors and do this without judgement.  Journaling can be a valuable tool for this process too.

  1. Mindfulness: Unplug for a few hours.  Practicing mindfulness can help you stay grounded in the present moment, reducing stress and anxiety about ‘what may (or may not) happen’. Tune into yourself rather than your social media channels.  Even a few minutes of deep breathing can make a noticeable difference.

  1. Regular Exercise: Physical activity is a powerful mood enhancer. Engaging in regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.

  1. Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Nourish your body and mind with a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and hydration. These factors profoundly impact your overall wellbeing.  As much as it might be tempting at the time to reach for a bottle of wine when you’re feeling down, remember it is a depressant and alters some delicate chemicals in our brain, inevitably leaving you feeling worse.

  1. Social Connections: Chat, chat and chat some more.  Connect in with friends and family. Social support plays a vital role in maintaining good mental health.

  1. Professional Help: Don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. Therapy and counseling provide valuable tools for managing challenges.

  1. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when you're overwhelmed and establish healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life.

Taking notice of your wellbeing and mental health shouldn’t be a luxury - it should be a necessary priority.  Just as a car needs regular maintenance to function optimally, so do our minds and bodies.

By paying more attention to the present moment and our thought and feelings, understanding the mind-body connection, and taking practical steps to prioritise your wellbeing, you can pave the way for a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Remember, you deserve to live a great life - not only productive but also mentally and emotionally vibrant!
